Motorcycle's CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) and ignition coil are both core components of the ignition system, directly determining the engine's ignition timing and spark intensity.
The CDI and ignition coil work closely together in a motorcycle's ignition system to ensure that, during proper engine cycle time, the ignition system can generate enough voltage at the right time to create a spark, igniting the fuel mixture. These two components work together to provide a reliable ignition function to the engine, thus allowing normal operation of the motorcycle.
People who are familiar with motorcycle parts know that when the motorcycle CDI or ignition coil fails, the symptoms they show are very similar, which makes it difficult for us to judge, so how should we distinguish the symptoms of CDI and ignition coil failure?When there is a problem with the CDI and the ignition coil of themotorcycle, there will be the following five demonstrations:
1.The engine cannot start:Whether it is a problem with the CDI or the ignition coil, the most obvious and common symptom is that the engine cannot start. This is because they are bothkey components to ensure spark plug ignition.
2.Intermittent ignition:Both CDI and ignition coil failures can lead to an unstable ignition signal, manifesting itself in intermittent engine starts.
3.No spark or weak spark:Both CDI and ignition coil failures can result in no or weak spark plug. This can lead to incomplete combustion, affecting engine performance.
4.Unstable engine running:Problems with the CDI or the ignition coil can cause unstable engine running, manifesting itself in shaking, loss of power or irregular operation.
5.Abnormal engine sounds:Failures can cause abnormal combustion, resulting in unusual engine sounds, such as unexpected noises or vibrations.
So what should we use to distinguish between CDI failure and ignition coil failure? You can try to judge from the following four methods.

1.Spark check:Remove the spark plug and connect it to the ignition coil. Attempt to start the motorcycle and observe if there is an obvious spark. The absence of spark may be indicative of problems with the CDI or the ignition coil.

2.Strength test:Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the ignition coil. Consult the vehicle manual to obtain normal values. Abnormal resistance could indicate problems with the ignition coil.

3.Visual inspection of the CDI:Visually inspect the CDI for obvious damage, exposed wires, or burned parts. A damaged CDI may require replacement.

4.Replacement test:If possible, use a well-known CDI or ignition coil as a replacement. If the problem is resolved after replacement, it could indicate a component failure.
Personally, I recommend the second method, which is to use domite to measure the resistance of the ignition coil, which is a more accurate and effective method, of course, we may want to try the following other methods when we have limited tools.
