It has two main functions:
Rectification: It converts the alternating current (AC) generated by the magneto into direct current (DC), as most of the car's electrical devices (such as the battery, ECU, and lights) use DC.
Voltage Regulation: It maintains the voltage at approximately 14.5 volts to prevent battery damage from excess voltage or charging failure from insufficient voltage.
-
Zener diodes (at least two 12V)
-
Resistors (to limit the current through the diodes)
-
Electrolytic Capacitor (to smooth the output)
-
Heat sink
-
Printed circuit board (PCB) or breadboard
-
Soldering iron and tin
-
Cables and connectors
-
Zener diodes are key components that allow voltage control. Understand how they work before you start.
-
Design your circuit taking into account the 12V input and the regulated output. A basic schematic will include Zener diodes, resistors, and a capacitor.
-
Place the components on the PCB or breadboard following your design. Make sure the connections are solid.
-
Use the soldering iron to connect the components. Be careful not to overheat the Zener diodes.
-
Zener diodes can get hot, so attach a heat sink to prevent overheating.
-
Connect your homemade voltage regulator to a 12V source and use a multimeter to measure the output. Adjust if necessary.
-
Check the polarity of all components to avoid short circuits.
-
If you notice fluctuations in the output, adjust the resistors for precise regulation.
-
Install fuses in the circuit to protect it against possible short circuits.
